The vast majority of the people who visit Hilton Head Island every year actually know very little about the place they are visiting.  The island has a rich history including its use by Native Americans during colder parts of the year, its early settlement and colonization, its roles during the American Revolution and the Civil War, and its rich Gullah history.  In addition, the island is part of a unique coastal environment of interest to science buffs and tourists, and the sheer beauty of the island and its waterways is worthy of serious exploration.  For those willing to venture beyond the beaches and golf courses, there are many Hilton Head tour companies available to teach you more about the beautiful place you are visiting.
